Sharpening and AI enlargement do different jobs

Choose a modest edge adjustment or optional enlargement based on the source.

Sharpening emphasizes existing edges

A sharpening filter increases local edge contrast. It can make an image appear crisper, but too much can create bright outlines and exaggerate noise. It does not supply a missing original character or facial feature.

AI predicts additional detail

FormFile's optional 2× enhancement enlarges supported inputs using a locally loaded model. It may produce plausible-looking detail that differs from the original. Its output must be checked, especially where accuracy matters more than appearance.

Try the simpler option first

For a reasonably clear image that looks slightly soft, start with a low sharpening value. Process and compare. For a small non-critical image, try AI separately and inspect fine patterns. Avoid combining maximum sharpening with enlargement before seeing what either does.

Respect the destination

Signatures and certificates should retain their original information. For official photos, follow the institution's editing restrictions. Neither method guarantees acceptance or turns an unusably blurred original into a reliable record.
