Adjust photo brightness and contrast without washing it out
Make restrained changes and compare the result before downloading.
Identify the actual problem
A dark photo needs a different adjustment from a flat-looking photo. Brightness changes overall lightness; contrast changes the separation between lighter and darker areas. Large changes can hide detail instead of improving it.
Start close to the original
Open Improve photo quality and keep brightness and contrast at their starting values of 100. Make a small change to one control and process a preview. Check skin, hair, bright clothing and background rather than judging only the centre of the picture.
Protect important details
If bright areas become plain white or dark areas merge into black, reduce the change. Sharpening cannot restore detail that an extreme light adjustment has removed from the output. Use a better source when the original is badly underexposed or blurred.
Finish with the upload requirements
Once the photo looks suitable, confirm the output format, dimensions and KB limit. For identity submissions, follow the receiving rules on photo editing. Save the final attachment separately so the unedited source remains available.
